Ngā mihi nui ki koutou katoa!

This is a year of signiicant anniversaries of
events that have shaped modern New Zealand
– such as the 175th anniversary of the signing
of the Treaty of Waitangi, 150 years since the
establishment of Wellington as our capital city;
100 years since the Gallipoli campaign; and 40
years since the land march led by Dame Whina
Cooper. Some events are to be celebrated;
some, like the Battle of Te Tarata, remain
troubling in the national memory.

By coming together today in this commemoration, there is an opportunity to
acknowledge an important period in our nation’s history. By learning about
our past, we can understand how to create a better future. We honour those
who were here 150 years ago, we mourn those who lost their lives, and we
remember the impact of this conlict on the generations that followed them.

Kia maumahara tonu tātou kia rātou – we will remember them.
