Wairoa township acts as the vital hub for a huge district. This includes Mahia with a number of
beautiful beaches and peaceful holiday homes. A natural playground for people who like to surf,
fish, kayak or swim. The Scenic Reserve and Mineral pools at Morere Hot Springs are one
of the areas “must do” activities. Visitors can enjoy the hot and cold pools and a great wilderness
of walking tracks. The Morere Hot Springs are set on 364 hectares of native bush reserve. Pre-
European and Māori spoke of the healing qualities of the water at the springs.
Coming into Wairoa on State Highway 2 (Mahia Avenue) - a left turn onto Bridge Street will take
you over the bridge and into town or continue straight on block to the junction of Carroll Street
(SH38) on the corner you will find Wairoa Motorcycles Ltd (see advert page 109) A left turn here
will take you along Carroll Street to the river edge where on the right is the Ferry Hotel (see advert
page 109) A right turn here will take you to Lake Waikaremoana & Te Urewera - see Side Trip
      Page 110.
A left turn (Mahia Ave & Bridge St) takes you towards town. As you approach the bridge on the left
is the Vista Motor Lodge & Restaurant (see advert page 109). As you cross the bridge you will realise
that Wairoa is very much a river town, with the bridge being the lifeline between the towns two halves.
The present day bridge was built after 1988 when Cyclone Bola destroyed the previous bridge. Wairoa
has an attractive shopping centre alongside the river. Visitors have a good choice of accommodation and
eateries as well as numerous retail outlets that make this more than just a service town.
Over the bridge a right turn at the roundabout will lead you to the Wairoa Community Centre
and Swimming Pool. A left turn takes you along Marine Parade where you will find Oslers
Bakery & Café (see advert page 108) and East End Café & Bar (see advert page 108).
Continuing straight through the roundabout, at the next junction (Queen Street) you will find the
Wairoa i-Site Visitor Information Centre (see map page 107 & advert above). Across the street
from the Information Centre you will find Wairoa Wines & Spirits Liquor Centre (see advert
      page 109).
Listed for your convenience on the following pages are a choice of accommodation, eateries and
well stocked specialty shops catering for your every need.

                                                               Wairoa township.
